I designed and made this beautiful shaker end table. The top is olive wood from Jerusalem and the apron is spalted maple and the legs are spalted red oak.
The design came to me when myself and my wife Rachel attended a sound bath at the Wharton Eshrick museum. I was inspired by the spiral staircase in the center of his studio/home and I applied the feeling of movement to the legs by making them octagons. I wanted to convey the movement of a storm in this piece by highlighting the wild grain in the olive wood top as the storm and the backlit inlaid glass as hope and the ability to persevere no matter the situation. The spalted apron and legs show the scars from previous storms, but both remain standing as the differing grain and colors of the wood add to the experience by adding a story and a chance to connect.
Materials: olive wood, red oak and maple
Method of joinery: mortise and tennon.
